Waterloo Classics car meet, London

On the third Saturday of every month, passionate classic car enthusiasts gather with their prized possessions on Lower Marsh, Waterloo, to display them to whoever wanders by.

After being in London for years, this is the first we’d heard about the car meet, so we decided to pop down for a look.

If you are drawn to classic cars or appreciate a good motor, this is the place for you.

At the day’s peak, there were roughly 30 to 35 vehicles on display, ranging from Jaguars to Minis, VWs, a standout Ford Escort Mk1 from the late 1960s or early 1970s, and one motorbike.

According to the Waterloo Classics website, the meet typically unfolds near the iconic Scooter Café, which, if you haven’t been, is worth a visit.

It’s a coffee shop by day and a bar by night, featuring some rather cool Vespa and coffee memorabilia inside.

This car meet is equally as enjoyable as Southside Hustle (a meet at Wimbledon Common on the first Sunday of the month), despite being smaller.

One advantage is the surroundings of Lower Marsh, which is a fab area of town.

It’s a vibrant street with a market and tons of cafes, bars, restaurants, bakeries, and shops to visit.

Another is its location in central London, right by one of the city’s major train stations, which has four tube lines (of which three operate on the weekend), making it easily accessible.

Then there are the other points of interest nearby, namely Leake Street Arches and Roupell Street.

Leak Street Arches are famous for graffiti, and Roupell Street is like stepping back in time, where you will usually catch a vintage car or two to see.

Beyond the stone’s throw from Lower Marsh, the Imperial War Museum is also worth visiting, located a 10- to 15-minute walk away.

Like Southside Hustle, Waterloo Classics was a social event, with plenty of photographers around and vehicle owners popping their car bonnets to show passersby what was under the hood.

If you’re into photography, these meetups offer a fine opportunity to capture some pictures.

After all, the cars are aesthetically pleasing, with their timeless design and interesting details, and they neither move nor talk back.
