Tucked away down a path just a stone’s throw from the Thames and the National Trust’s Ham House and Gardens, Petersham Nurseries is a unique location, perfectly combining a plant nursery, lifestyle shop, Green Michelin Star restaurant, and Teahouse in a space you have never experienced before.
If you like something unusual and quirky, just a little further down the river is the brilliantly eclectic Eel Pie Island, which is London’s only inhabited island.
Petersham Nurseries Richmond
A lot is happening in the Petersham world.
They have an organic farm in Devon, along with a wine merchant, both of which supply products to nurseries in Richmond, as well as their restaurant, Bayte, located on the south coast in St Leonards-on-Sea.
We first encountered Petersham Nurseries when they had a shop in Covent Garden, not realising they had a location in Richmond.
Although the location in Richmond is considered a garden nursery, it is more than just a place to buy plants; it is a lifestyle destination.

Restaurant, Teahouse & Afternoon Tea
The restaurant and the Teahouse are two separate places within the nursery.
The restaurant is certified organic and has received a Michelin Green Star, an award recognising its commitment to sustainability.
The restaurant is in a lush greenhouse with a canopy of vines, bougainvillea, and jasmine.
If you’d prefer something less formal, there’s the Teahouse next door.
No reservation is required for the Teahouse, and it can get busy, so you’ll likely experience a short wait to get in.
However, the wait is worth it because there’s a comprehensive offering of food, including salads, pasta, tea, coffee, and, of course, cake, in beautiful surroundings.
Beyond the Teahouse and its informality is the London-famous afternoon tea, which must be booked in advance.
You can book the restaurant and afternoon tea through the Petersham Nurseries website.

Garden Nursery
The garden nursery isn’t as expansive as you might find at a typical nursery or garden centre, but there’s plenty on offer to satisfy your green fingers.
Inside, it’s very well-dressed, as you’d expect from Petersham, blending rustic surroundings with expertly curated displays of indoor plants, pots, seeds, tools, garden accessories and gifts.
Outside, you’ll find garden plants and ornaments along the few paths there are to wander.

Lifestyle Shop
The lifestyle shop is something else.
Housed in the same building as the restaurant, the shop boasts a wonderfully rustic charm, courtesy of the items for sale, the structure in which it resides, and its bare, earthy ground.
There’s a sense of being outside, yet you are inside.
Luxurious goods surround you in a comfortable and peaceful environment.
In the lifestyle shop, you’ll find candles, incense, vases, paintings, kitchen and tableware, glassware, books, stationery and vintage furniture.

Visitor Information
The nurseries are a little far from Central London, but they are worth the journey.
The nearest rail link is Richmond station, served by trains and the District line.
From there, you can enjoy a scenic 30-minute walk through Richmond and along the Thames, or you can catch the 65 bus, which stops just a couple of minutes from the nurseries.
